Giant Clam in the Wild. (Tridacindaes)

The Giant Clam of the South Pacific is the largest of the bi-value mollusks. The diameter of its shell may exceed 3 1/2 feet. It is a fixed animal and lives on shallow reef locations. When its shell is ajar, one can see its blue fleshy mantle.

There are six species of Tridacnidae. Shell Light utilizes Tridacnidae Derasa for our production. These shells have been over harvested in the wild for their meat, thus they have been named an endangered species. They are now protected from wild reef harvesting.

Ours are purchased from a closely inspected aqua-culture farm. This enables our use of shells without disrupting the natural wild habitats. Free swimming larvae from the giant clams raised on the aqua culture farm - add to and increase the native populations in the wild. Shell Light meets all environmental criteria established by the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (C.I.T.E.S.).

Prior to importation, the shells are inspected at the USA Port of Entry by the Fish and Wildlife Agency to ensure compliance with all regulations.

Our commitment is to always implement environmentally sensitive methods for purchasing our shells and producing our fixtures.
